Leadership Change in UNESCO Global Geopark Vestjylland

Chairman Steffen Damsgaard states:

"The board would like to thank Karen-Louise Smidth for her significant efforts in relation to UNESCO Global Geopark Vestjylland’s – commonly referred to as Geopark Vestjylland – successful re-certification and continued UNESCO recognition. This has been an important milestone for us and we highly appreciate the work put into this process. At the same time, the board has decided that it is time to take a new direction for Geopark Vestjylland, which also means that we are seeking a leadership profile that will meet the upcoming strategic goals and unlock the full potential of Geopark Vestjylland, which covers an area of over 4,600 square kilometers, including the three municipalities of Holstebro, Struer, and Lemvig."

"We are in an exciting phase where we are considering the future opportunities for Geopark Vestjylland. It requires a new leader who can strengthen the development of the organization at all levels and continue the positive results we have achieved," adds Chairman Steffen Damsgaard.

Karen Louise Smidth States:

"I am pleased that Geopark Vestjylland was re-certified as UNESCO Global Geopark Vestjylland, a central task when I was hired as Managing Director. I also take pride in the establishment of the joint secretariat for Geopark Vestjylland and Nissum Fjord Nature Park, as well as the collaboration with all parties and individuals involved with Nissum Fjord Nature Park and Geopark Vestjylland. I now look forward to new challenges."

Interim Management During Leadership Recruitment
The board has also reached an agreement with Harald Mikkelsen, former rector at VIA University College and current board member of Geopark Vestjylland, to serve as interim manager. He will take over the daily management of the secretariat and the dedicated team of employees. The secretariat serves as the administrative body for both Geopark Vestjylland and Nissum Fjord Nature Park.

The board will soon begin the process of searching for a new leader who will be able to take the necessary steps to continue Geopark Vestjylland's development. A new leader is expected to be appointed by the end of the first quarter of 2025.
